Asbestos is the greatest single cause of work related deaths in the UK.
Asbestos was used in hundreds of different products and buildings from the 1950’s up until its final ban in 1999. It is estimated that up to 500,000 commercial, industrial and public buildings in the UK are likely to contain asbestos.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 place a legal duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises. The Regulations cover all non-domestic premises, whatever type of business is carried out in them. They also cover the common areas of residential rented properties including halls, stair wells, lift shafts and roof spaces.
Asbestos is a priority subject and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is very active in taking enforcement action against those who fail to comply.Everyone must take action now – if you are a duty holder you must:-
- find out whether your building(s) contain asbestos, and what condition it is in;
- assess the risk, e.g. if it is likely to release fibres;
- make a plan to manage that risk.
